I went winter camping last weekend. What a delight!! It was my first experience combining my love of camping and outdoor activities with a snowy setting.
Our yurt had a wood burning stove but no electricity so arriving on a particularly cold day was invigorating, with several trips from the car to the yurt hauling our equipment on toboggans – it reminded me of portaging on canoe trips! We built up a good fire indoors and explored the woods on snowshoe, our hike leading us to a beautiful scenic lookout, the sky turning from bright blue to pearly mauves and greys as twilight came calling. Back at camp a big bonfire brightened things up as supper was cooked and the night sky came into sharper focus.
I was very content to crawl into my cozy sleeping bag, setting a timer to wake me every 2 hours to throw another log on the fire. The next morning I felt I’d been at camp for a week, everything around me familiar and necessary. The day brought more fires, fun in the snow and of course food!
